Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Missouri - Columbia, 1997.
This study investigated the extent to which Taiwanese college students devoted effort to their college experience and its relation to their attainment of the intended outcome of higher education. The study also examined whether student involvement theory can be applied to college students outside of the United States. Specifically, it asked: how well does the theory apply to students attending Taiwanese colleges?

The sample of the study consisted of 631 students from two five-year colleges in a district of northern Taiwan. Data was collected by giving the Chinese version of the Five-Year College Student Experiences Questionnaire (FYCSEQ) to the sample of subjects. The questionnaire was adapted from the third edition of the College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CSEQ) originally developed by Pace in 1979 and the Community College Students Experiences Questionnaire (CCSEQ) developed by Friedlander, Pace, and Lehman in 1990 and translated by the author. The questionnaire was distributed and administered to each classroom by the researcher or by a designated student or teacher. Responses to questionnaires was entered into a database by hand.

The results of the present study revealed that Taiwanese college students' effort devoted to a wide range of college activities was significantly correlated with their self-reported educational attainment. The more effort students devoted to their college experience, the higher the gains they reported. The results coincide with results of several studies of American college students (Davis & Murrell, 1993a; Pace, 1984; Pace et al; 1988).

The results of the present study support the theories of student involvement and quality of effort (Astin, 1984; Pace, 1984). These results of the study provide empirical evidence that student involvement theory can be applied to college students outside the United States, especially students enrolled in Taiwanese five-year college students. Implications for future research are discussed, including the need to study a broader sample of Taiwanese college students and cross-cultural studies to establish distinctive features of Taiwanese college experiences.
