Many researchers have been interested in the investigation of the relationships between abstract constructs believed to affect human thought, emotion, and behavior. Studies of constructs such as values and attitude or values and behavior have provided insight into how humans perceive, evaluate, and react to things, events, and other people based on these attributes.

Many researchers have been interested in the investigation of the relationships between abstract constructs believed to affect human thought, emotion, and behavior. Studies of constructs such as values and attitude or values and behavior have provided insight into how humans perceive, evaluate, and react to things, events, and other people based on these attributes.

The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships among values, attitude, and behavior for students from different cultures and of different ethnic backgrounds. A stratified sample of 450 students from three urban schools in Malaysia was selected. The three main ethnic groups in Malaysia are Malay, Chinese, and Indian. The sample was divided into equal gender and ethnic groups (i.e., 225 per gender, 150 per ethnic group). Four instruments were used to assess values, attitude, behavior in school, and behavior out of school.

Confirmatory factor and Rasch analyses were used. The final measures derived from these procedures were then analyzed using ANOVA, correlations, and tests of mean differences.

It was found that means for all three constructs were different across gender and ethnicity. Members of different groups evidently understood and reacted differently to each construct. Females reported more positive values, attitudes, and behavior. Malay male students reported more negative values, attitude, and behavior among the ethnic groups.

The major findings from this study were: (a) it is difficult to obtain a measure that is reliable and stable in a cross-cultural study of this nature, and (b) the Malay group results reflect the current trend in Malaysian youth which is a concern to the relevant authorities.
