Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, 1997.
A stochastic frontier model is used to estimate the technical efficiencies in Chinese agricultural production. Two different model specifications are employed. One data set covers 24 provinces for 1978 to 1992 while the other covers 9 provinces from 1970 to 1992. I found out that the model defined is adequate to represent data. I also concluded that the technical efficiencies in the selected provinces are about 65 percent of the potential level by one model. The model hardly detected any differences in the technical efficiencies of the selected provinces before and after economic reforms. The data also indicated the trend of decreasing efficiencies from 1978 to 1992.
