At this time, when the purpose of adult basic education (ABE) is being narrowed down to workforce development and control over high school equivalency (HSE) exams is being transferred over to private, for-profit corporations, this case study challenges the notion that ABE is merely a puppeteer of our economy and that it should accept wholesale the dictates of private educational corporations. It speaks to the importance of ABE educators joining together to resist the dominant ways the system is being redefined by these notions. This inquiry was triggered by the shift, which recently occurred in New York to the TASC(TM) (Test to Assess Secondary Completion), a new HSE exam that has been aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). It used as its foundation interviews with ABE educators who work at an adult learning center in the New York metropolitan area.
