The purpose of the study was to determine if the Newest Vital Sign (NVS) was a reliable and valid health literacy assessment tool to be used in the inpatient setting. The NVS and the Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (S-TOFHLA), which was used as the criterion in the study, were administered to patients at Rush University Medical Center. Cronbach's a for the NVS (a=0.37) indicated that the NVS is not a reliable health literacy assessment tool. Correlation between the NVS and S-TOFHLA was similar to previous research (rho=0.59). Participants were more likely to score lower on the STOFHLA if they were non-Hispanic Black, had a high school education or lower, or were 60 years old or above. These characteristics may be taken into consideration as a physician approaches a patient with care and attention to potential low health literacy.
