Thesis (M.E.S.)--Lamar University - Beaumont, 2015.
This thesis paper deals with implementing an Energy Management System (EMS) for an electric vehicle. With the increase in demand for a suitable substitution for the conventional gasoline powered vehicles, the concept of electric powered vehicles has started to gain popularity. Over time the electric vehicles have become complicated with the use of multiple battery packs, ultra-capacitors, fast charging methods and the possibility to capture regenerative braking energy. Hence a suitable EMS is required to manage and monitor an electric vehicle in order to improve efficient power delivery, fuel economy and battery life.

A rule based Energy Management System was implemented to control the power delivery from the battery packs based on the power requirements of the motor. The EMS acts as the main control unit of the vehicle providing solutions to many problems faced by current electric vehicles. It was found that by implementing an EMS, problems relating to current electric vehicles like, low initial acceleration and decreased battery life can be resolved. The concept of regenerative braking was also discussed and a complete working model was implemented to improve fuel economy.
