This dissertation examines the representation of the passions both in theory and in practice in the works of Anne-Louise Germaine de Stael (1766-1817). Her works exhibit a career-long, profound engagement with long-standing debates surrounding the nature and impact of the passions on the individual and on society. Drawing on the ideas of her predecessors, Stael develops a new approach to the passions by focusing not on the moral or social impact of the passions, but on their effect on human happiness. While she proposes an image of the passions as destructive to happiness, she nonetheless maintains that there could be pleasure after the ravages of the passions. In her theoretical works, she proposes various means of attaining this aim, an aim that she expands and refines in her literary writing.

520 $a Because Stael repeatedly returned to the passions, my methodology is grounded in reading Stael within the context of her own ideas and time. In the first two chapters, devoted respectively to De l'Influence des passions and Essai sur les fictions, I examine critically Stael's effort to produce a theory of the passions and of their representation in fiction that is uniquely her own. In the next two chapters, I investigate the way in which Stael uses the literary space of the novel to probe elements of her theory that were left un(der)developed in her two treatises. In Delphine, Stael insists that any attempt to find happiness must conform exactly to the criteria she laid out in her theoretical works or result in greater unhappiness. In Corinne, she explores in greater depth an affective relationship that she had proposed as a potential source of happiness to highlight the precarious nature of such sources. This dissertation argues that reading Delphine and Corinne through a number of Stael's own theoretical texts (including works such as De l'Allemagne and De la literature) suggests new interpretations of her novels that turn away from extant biographical, feminist, and political readings. It also shows Stael to be an engaged and systematic thinker who actively reconceptualized ideas on the passions at a crucial moment between Enlightenment and Romanticism.
