Thesis (M.S.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2015.
Symbols of Transformation and Being: A Journey of Decolonization is both a creative and analytical paper that argues the importance of reclaiming a balanced way of life through knowing, recognizing and incorporating the collective unconscious-- its symbols and creative expression. Since the advent of modern civilization, the process of western colonization and globalization has been rooted in unidimensional concepts of hierarchy, competition, and reason systematically ignoring and denigrating the creative, intuitive, instinctual, feminine, collective self. Through the exploration of archetypal symbols specifically the circle and the square, the labyrinth, the tree of life, the mask, and the spiral this thesis highlights ancient threads of knowledge that seek connections rather than separations and the unification of polarities to embrace a new perception of life and become a beacon for the transcendence to wellbeing. Interdisciplinary, this thesis is based on theories and teachings from artists, anthropologists, environmental activists, psychologists, and spiritual leaders.
