Thesis (Ph.D.)--Institute for Clinical Social Work (Chicago), 2015.
The dissertation explored the subjective experiences of Veterans Affairs mental health trauma clinicians that treated OEF/OIF/OND veterans with war-related PTSD. The data was analyzed using relational psychoanalytic theory, countertransference reactions, and adult attachment styles. The study found four key elements. First, it found that many therapists had family members who were combat veterans, and they treated this population because they felt comfortable and familiar with military culture and veteran issues and not out of a need to master their own familial trauma. Second, it discovered that vicarious traumatization is complex and varied and being overwhelmed occurs by levels of awareness. Next it found that therapists commonly extended their treatment sessions well beyond the 12-session protocol for the evidence-based psychotherapies currently used in the VA to treat PTSD. Last, the study discovered that directly providing combat treatment can result in developing more compassion, empathy, humility, and knowledge within the therapist. The defense of the dissertation was passed with distinction.
