This qualitative, phenomenological study investigated the long term influences of the coach athlete relationship on the personal and professional lives of five athletes from east Texas high schools who participated in a state championship football game prior to 2006. Data were collected through narrative inquiry and participant interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings from this study suggest that the coach athlete relationship is a critical factor in the success of the athletes' long term development. Related conclusions included the importance of building relationships with athletes, coaches recognition of their role and understanding that athletes are watching them, coaches understanding the long term impact of their actions, the need for creation of an athletic experience that provides for long term personal and professional development, and the purposefully teaching of life skill development. The research in this study provides coaches with practices and techniques for long term life skill development.
