Thesis (M.F.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2015.
The costume design for California State University's Fall 2014 production of Merrily We Roll Along by Stephen Sondheim strives to address challenges presented by the complex and richly layered plot of the show as well as technical demands placed by the structure in which it is presented. Clarifications of the design choices like texture are presented as elucidations into the multidimensional characters Sondheim has written while color choices help clarify visual challenges caused by a production with a very large cast of undergraduate actors. Using textual references and critical reviews, an analysis of previous costume designs of Merrily We Roll Along extends a comparative structure with which to engage with the choices made in designing this production.
