This qualitative study examined the nutrition knowledge of allied health students and their attitudes toward nutrition education and dietetics. A self-administered questionnaire was administered to nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and physician assistant students. A sample size of at least 50 students was expected. The questionnaire had demographics, nutrition knowledge assessment, and attitudes toward nutrition education sections. The data were analyzed using a percent system for the nutrition knowledge section and ANOVA to compare the majors. The attitudes section was analyzed through the use of frequency table which used a tally system and chi- square to compare the attitudes of the majors. The mean nutrition knowledge score was 71%, reflecting inadequate nutrition knowledge. A little more than half of the participants (54%) scored below 75% on the knowledge section. Physician assistant students' mean nutrition knowledge score suggested adequate nutrition knowledge. However, physical therapy, nursing, and occupational therapy students mean scores reflected inadequate nutrition knowledge. Results of the attitude section of the survey showed that 88% of participants wanted more nutrition included within their curriculum. In addition, 99% of participants agreed that it was important to include dietitians in healthcare teams and 95% of participants believed that they would know when to refer patients to dietitians. This information shows that allied health students on a whole have a good attitude toward nutrition and working with dietitians.
