Animal shelter organizations, their employees, and managers experience unique short- and long-term stressors---in particular, the euthanasia of otherwise healthy animals and the inability to verbally communicate directly with their animal clientele. The vast majority of the research into workplace stresses has evolved from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) studies, and to a significant extent has examined the human health care and social work industries. In contrast, this investigation was designed to determine if there is a statistical correlation between turnover intention and the three independent variables of compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction among shelter employees. Survey data from 137 participants employed in six different animal shelters in Michigan were analyzed using linear regression to calculate the statistical ability to predict turnover intention using these three explanatory variables. Three primary hypotheses and their individual sub-hypotheses were analyzed at a 95% confidence level. In summary, the results of each of the six hypotheses were statistically insufficient to suggest that turnover intention could be predicted with measures of compassion fatigue, burnout, and compassion satisfaction using the existing survey---either in part or in full. The implications of this study, along with specific recommendations for future research, are detailed herein.
