We use social network analysis (SNA) and exponential random graph models (ERGMs) to model the collaboration network in information science (IS) area using the data from four IS journals: Scientometrics, Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology (JASIST), Informetrics, and Information Sciences. The data ranges from year 1983 to year 2013. We model each year separately using exponential random graph modeling (ERGM) method and estimate the model parameters using Markov chain Monte Carlo maximum likelihood (MCMCMLE) method.

Our results show that the effects of geodesic distance and the organizational boundary on scholarly collaboration are negative; such effects decrease over time. This trend is coincident with the development of ICTs. The effect of the profession type is negative as well; however, it does not show any trend over time. The country effect, controlling other non-structural impact factors, does not show a decreasing trend over time. The results indicate that the nationality issue per se does not change so much at least with the development of ICTs. Finally, the knowledge boundary effect, controlling other non-structural impact factors, decreases after 1990. However, the decreasing trend is not significant.
