Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) faces a changing cultural landscape resulting from its civil war. New categorical descriptions emerged as a part of the foreign imposed Dayton Peace Agreement. Desire to move into European Union membership inadvertently exposed discriminatory structure and overt discrimination towards mixed religion and ethnicity background individuals. Consequently this segment of BiH population has been overlooked in politics, legislation, and peace building efforts. This heuristic phenomenological study explored cultural identity construct and the life experience of seven female and eight male mixed background Bosnians living in Sarajevo, BiH. Cultural identity was examined through basic life domains. Discourse analysis included themes such as forced choice identification, freedom of choice, war, conversion, compromise, consolidation/synthesis, disclosure/declaration, attachment/belonging, experience, and mixed perspective. Results revealed shared factors in construct as language, family values, citizenship, and values (diversity, unity, respect and tolerance). In conclusion, Bosnian complex cultural identity arises from conversion, compromise, or consolidation/synthesis. Most significant aspects of experience were related to emotional, relational, educational, vocational, and legal domains. Religion played a key role in the construction of cultural identity for mixed background Bosnians. Individuals who are not affiliated with any religion segment faced the greatest level of discrimination.
