This study utilizes a Grounded Theory approach to look at Knowledge Management through the lens of high-performing, high-functioning, mobile and independent professionals who hold the knowledge that organizations covet. Through these individuals the study explores alternative means for leveraging knowledge contributions and reducing the friction involved in knowledge management in favor of managing for knowledge. The study proposes a theoretical concept of knowledge empowerment that consists of six knowledge strategies and their constituting elements for knowledge-enabling professionals. The strategies suggest, among other opportunities, a third method called virtualization for operationalizing intellectual assets to complement codification and personalization.
