The roles and functions of distance education vis-a-vis conventional universities in two nations which display quite different characteristics are examined.

Thoughts for future directions are integrated into the above findings through a quantitative approach, using data from the Statistical Yearbook of China and the Educational Statistical Yearbook of China during 1987--1996.
520 $a Finally, the author's viewpoints for distance-education universities are discussed through a redefining of the realm of distance education, and recalling of the tasks of distance-education universities as a contribution towards ways of settlement. It is the author's intention and motivation that the findings of the current study in China and Japan could provide some clues to solving the bigger and harder problems of higher education in the worldwide situation.
