The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between factors including student gender and class status (undergraduate, graduate) that contributed to the access, motives, and college choice for overseas study of Taiwanese foreign students attending the University of Southern California. Questionnaires were sent to 688 subjects, 201 of them were returned and analyzed.

The result of ANOVA tests indicated that male students were significantly older than female students, F(1,199) = 24.475, $p <$.001, Undergraduate had spend considerably more time in the U.S. than graduate students, F(1,196) = 14.147, $p <$.001, and came from richer families than graduate students, F(1,192) = 12.177, $p <$.005, Male students had scored extensively higher than female students on the entrance examinations, F(1,194) = 20.064, $p <$.001, and graduate students had scored much higher than undergraduate students, F(1,194) = 4.220, $F <$.05, The result of MANOVA tests suggested that there were no significant differences in their motives for coming to the United States and reasons for attending the University of Southern California.

Overall, this study can contribute to mutual understanding between American colleges and universities and foreign students. These findings can also contribute to, and provide information on, Taiwanese foreign students at the University of Southern California to current and prospective foreign students, educators, government officials in the United States and Taiwan, information centers, academic and admissions advisors, and private advising agencies.
