520 $a This study adopted Biber's multi-dimensional approach to register variation. For this study, I have built a corpus comprising 185 texts from nine spoken registers (94 texts) and eight written registers (91 texts), totaling 144,942 words. Texts were segmented, tagged and counted by computational tools. The frequencies of 36 linguistic features in 185 texts were counted. The normalized mean scores for these features were subject to factor analysis. Five underlying dimensions were identified in this study: Interactional vs. Informational, Personal expression of emotive, Persuasion: logical vs. temporal linking, Narrative, Involved exposition vs. Precise reportage. These dimensions were used to specify the textual relations with respect to each dimension by plotting the dimension scores of each register on dimensions. Textual relations among these registers supported our interpretation of dimensions. It also showed that textual relations among the registers were best captured by multi-dimension construct, since no single dimension was capable of explaining all of the register variation in Taiwanese. Taiwanese data were used to test the validity of Biber's cross-linguistic generalizations with regard to the functional and structural aspects of discourse dimensions. The findings of this study indicated that there were some cross-linguistic universals at the discourse level, which govern the patterns of register variation.
