Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, San Diego, 1998.
This dissertation develops a semantico-pragmatic analysis of the interpretation and syntactic distribution of indefinite noun phrases (NPs) in Spanish, focusing on grammatical subjects and direct objects. The study investigates both "full" indefinites, i.e. NPs with an indefinite determiner such as un nino 'a child', as well as bare plurals, i.e. ninos 'children.' It is argued that the distribution and interpretation of indefinites are a result of the interaction among three different types of information, namely: (i) the information structure of the sentence, i.e. the assumptions made by the hearer about the speaker's knowledge of the situation, (ii) the judgment form it expresses (thetic/categorical), i.e. the construal of the individual interlocutors, and (iii) the lexical semantic factors involved, i.e. the meanings associated with the verb or verb class involved.

This analysis of indefinites sheds light on three larger topics in linguistic theory: First, it can be viewed as an argument in favor of the view that syntax, lexical semantics, and information structure/judgment types as interrelated and interdependent. In particular, certain word order-prosody combinations seem to have conventionalized semantico-pragmatic features associated with them. In this way, the location of an indefinite in a structure will have to conform to the overall semantico-pragmatic message it sends. Second, the analysis given here shows that the notion of judgment forms must be kept separate from information structure. Judgment forms depend on the individual interlocutor's perception of the situation while information structure is dependent on the assumptions of hearers about speakers' knowledge. Finally, it is argued that the distribution of bare plurals in Spanish is motivated by the same semantico-pragmatic factors that are responsible for the interpretation of indefinites in general.
