In order to encourage people with mobility impairments to enjoy the significant travel benefits, it is crucial to help them overcome psychological travel constraints and become self-determined to overcome the environmental and service constraints. Mental Construal Priming as a psychological intervention is thereby proposed in this study as a promising approach to facilitate leisure travel propensity among this population, through direct facilitation and indirectly through enhanced self-determined travel motivations. The mechanisms and effectiveness of the mental construal priming intervention have been examined with two pretest-posttest web-based experiments under both accessible and inaccessible tourism service contexts. The results supported: 1) the facilitation of travel propensity by perceived psychological needs satisfaction, with self-determined motivations as mediators (H1a, b, c, & d), 2) the direct facilitation of travel propensity by abstract construal priming within accessible service settings and by primed concrete construal under the inaccessible condition (H2a & b), and 3) the indirect facilitation of travel propensity by abstract construal priming through enhanced self-determined motivations, particularly through moderating the autonomy and competence effects on self-determined motivations (H3c & d). The hypotheses about the abstract construal priming enhancing self-determined motivations through the mediation of perceived autonomy and competence were nevertheless rejected (H3a & b). In general, abstract construal priming is superior in facilitating self-determined travel motivations given accessible service settings, yet when the service settings are inaccessible, the primed concrete construal is superior to abstract construal, especially when people perceive low levels of autonomy and competence from the trip.

By bridging the Construal Level Theory and Self-Determination Theory, this study extends the application of both theories to explain the "risk-taking" goal pursuit behaviors, such as leisure travel among people with mobility impairments. With such extension of two theories, mental construal priming as a simplified self-determination supportive tool is revealed, as well as its alternative functions as in facilitating travel effort investment despite travel constraints, which cannot be explained without the mediation of self-determined motivations. Practically, the travel service providers could enhance customers' purchase propensity by embedding the proper priming programs in their advertisements, corresponding to their current service levels and customer's psychological needs expectations.
