The Standard View of Social Reality consists of two closely related theses about the relationship between social entities and our mental states. According to the first thesis, social entities depend on our mental states in a distinctively ontological sense. According to the second thesis, social entities are less real than natural entities because they so depend on our mental states. I argue that the Standard View is false. Social entities are not ontologically mind dependent. I defend an alternative view of social reality according to which social entities depend on our behavior and the relations that obtain between us. On my view, social entities have non-arbitrary, extrinsic essences. Moreover, I argue that we are not in a privileged epistemic position with respect to them. To the contrary, our knowledge of these essences is a posteriori, and fallible. Finally, I argue that social entities are no less real than those entities which populate the so-called natural world.
