Thesis (M.S.)--Illinois State University, 2015.
This item must not be sold to any third party vendors.
This thesis is a collection of poetic essays that seeks to ask: How can traveling through different countries and cultures have the potential to expand a tourist's ability to understand their own socio-cultural position in the world, and thereby deepen their capacity to critically examine travel not merely as an act of leisure, but rather an opportunity for intellectual, social, ethical, and political engagement? The poetic essays deal specifically with border crossings from the United States to Europe. It represents not an exhaustive examination but one of many possible ways of investigating the subject of traveling in terms of place, culture, language, class, and identity.
