Thesis (Ed.D.)--Walden University, 2014.
Reading motivation begins to decline as students enter the upper elementary grades, so teachers continue to search for strategies to increase their students' motivation. Little research exits on the impact of digital reading on motivation. Guided by social cognitive theory and the transactional theory of reader response, the purpose of this non-experimental, pretest-posttest design study was to determine if digital reading improves students' motivation. Data were collected from the Motivation to Read Profile (MRP) survey from 67 students in Grades 1--5 who participated in a digital reading program. A paired-samples t test, 2 ANOVAs, and an ANCOVA were used to analyze the data. Results showed significant increases in MRP scores and thus support the need for an online professional learning community (PLC) to empower teachers, through collaboration and action research, to employ the most effective type of reading instruction using digital readers. Resources and strategies for teachers will be provided to integrate digital reading in the classroom through an online PLC. The online PLC will be recommended to the school administration to support teachers during the integration of a digital reading program. These resources can be used to help teachers guide students to become digital readers and thereby increase student reading motivation.
