In 1618, a German tax collector, Burckhard Grossmann, commissioned sixteen of Germany's most well-known Lutheran musicians to compose settings of the Psalm 116 text from Luther's translation of the Bible. Angst der Hellen und Friede der Seelen became a unique collection without precedent at this juncture of music history. It served as a personal expression of Grossmann's faith and displayed the conservative motet style of the Renaissance alongside the progressive compositional practices of the early Baroque. This document examines stylistic influences and instances of text painting of significant verses in five of the Psalm 116 settings -- those by Johann Hermann Schein, Melchoir Franck, Rogier Michael, Michael Praetorius, and Heinrich Schutz.
