Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2014.
The primary goal of this dissertation was to deploy the tools of experimental psychology to answer a simple yet fascinating question: Do people today still subscribe to the archaic folk conception of the heart as a mental organ (i.e. cardiopsychism)? After establishing the existence of cardiopsychism in modern minds from multiple perspectives, we examined the consequences of believing in cardiopsychism, that may be of important practical concern. In addition, we explored the reason why cardiopsychism continues to persist even though it runs counter to the widely available scientific evidence. Our data suggests that the heart-expressions in the language people speak might have been at least partially responsible for perpetuating this misconception.
