Satire has been used as a tool to enact change in society for many years. But how exactly does it work to inform a greater public and possibly enact change? Using Jurgen Habermas's (1962) theory of the public sphere to inform this critique, I will detail how satirical shows like The Smothers Brothers, Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report use three rhetorical devices (identified as understatement, hyperbole, and imitation) to do the following: inform the audience of the problems and issues in our country, critique the modern news, and speak directly to the government (ruling class) by highlighting its inability to come up with viable solutions to these problems.

Through analyzing these rhetorical devices, my critique will reveal how each device serves as an important tool used to inform the public. I will further discuss how shows like The Smothers Brothers, Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report serve as a public sphere following Habermas's criteria. Habermas's public sphere will provide the lens to illuminate the importance of mass media satire on a democratic society.
