Recent research has examined the opinions and beliefs of sport management professionals regarding the expectations of what a well-qualified candidates look like for entry-level jobs in the sport industry. Research has indicated that sport management students without engagement opportunities and experiences, may find themselves at a disadvantage as they pursue opportunities with internships and entry-level jobs in the field. The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of occupational engagement of sport management students. Specifically, this exploratory, quantitative study examined associations among demographic variables (age, gender, ethnicity, class rank, enrollment status, and student athlete status) and a psychological variable (career development locus of control) for relationships with the occupational engagement levels of sport management students. Participants included 198 (38 females and 160 males) sport management undergraduate students, and the majority of the participants (n=128) were Caucasian and 59 were African American who completed a survey packet consisting of demographic information, the Occupational Engagement Scale, and the Career Locus of Control Scale. Results of the point-biserial correlational analysis revealed seven significant correlated pairs ( p<.05) between class rank and occupational engagement, student athlete status and career locus of control, ethnicity and student athlete status, ethnicity and career locus of control, gender and ethnicity, and class rank and enrollment status. The results of the Pearson product moment correlation revealed two significant correlated pairs: career locus and occupational engagement, and age and occupational engagement. The results of regression analysis for hypothesis 1 indicated class rank (beta=.174; p<.05) and career locus of control (beta=.201; p<.05) were significant individual predictors of occupational engagement of sport management students, and hypothesis 2 returned one significant regression model for occupational engagement (p<.05) where collectively, seven predictor variables of age, gender, ethnicity, class rank, enrollment status, student athlete status, and career locus of control explained 8.5 % of the variance of occupational engagement of sport management students. Four recommendations for future research included: (a) a quantitative correlation study with an expanded sample, (b) a quantitative longitudinal study of sport management students, (c) a qualitative case study, and (d) a quantitative experimental study with an intervention related to career locus of control and occupational engagement.
