Thesis (M.S.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 2014.
This study aimed to identify the relationship between physical activities (overall activities [OA] measured using CHAMPS questionnaire, doing/not doing strengthening exercise, and walking measured by pedometer) and fall risk factors (bone density, muscle strength, balance, gait, balance confidence, depression) in 46 older females with past falls. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and independent t-tests. For OA (Low, Medium, and High ), High group scored best on all but one fall risk, with no statistical significance. Strengthening exercises significantly impacted strength and endurance of all muscle groups, but no other risk factors. For Walking ( Minimum, Moderate, and Maximum), Moderate walkers performed best for all risk factors except speed (Maximum was the best), but with no statistical significance. Further studies with a larger sample size are needed to be conclusive, but examining OA in relation to fall risk factors using a functional and occupational perspective, may lead to effective prevention of fall.
