The purpose of this action research was to evaluate the impact of sustained professional development to bring about awareness and changes to instructional strategies and assessment methods to improve student learning. Three questions guided this research, 1) To what extent has the sustained professional development initiative influenced teachers to reflect upon their teaching strategies and assessment methods? 2) In what ways and to what extent has the sustained professional development influenced teachers to alter teaching strategies and lessons to accommodate alternative forms of assessment, 3) To what extent and in what ways have alternative assessment methods and teaching strategies increased student learning and efficacy?

The findings reveal that the sustained professional development had an impact on teachers' adjusting their instructional strategies and incorporating assessment practices, yet the impact on student learning was limited. There were gaps in the perceptions between teachers and students concerning student learning and efficacy.
