Thesis (M.M.E.)--University of Massachusetts Lowell, 2015.
The purpose of this action research study was to determine what methods work best to teach jazz improvisation to middle school students. An Action research project, conducted at a school on the North Shore of Massachusetts, was used to investigate how students best learn jazz based improvisation and composition concepts. Ideas about how to teach the jazz language within one unit were explored. After lessons about jazz, forty-eight sixth graders were split into groups in order to improvise and compose a jazz song based on a twelve bar blues form. Common themes that resonate include listening and modeling; the amount of technique, the amount of theory and structure required; self-discovery; creating a positive experience, safe classroom environment , and especially the power of collaboration and creativity while arranging, improvising, and composing jazz/blues music.
