Spent fuel storage designs have taken a new wave of interest in the nuclear industry. With the lack of long-term storage facilities, optimizations of the existing storage pool and examination of feasible spent fuel storage alternatives such as the multi-purpose shipping cask are essential. This work reviews the various spent fuel storage options currently under study. The focus of this work is on the criticality analysis of those designs. The primary effort is on the implementation and verification of the criticality analysis capabilities at the University with the Monte Carlo based codes, KENO-Va and MCNP.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A series of critical experiments was performed during the late 1970's by The Babcock & Wilcox Company (B&W). There were 21 critical assemblies constructed to simulate a variety of close-packed LWR fuel storage configurations. This series of experiments provided a solid basis of benchmark criticality data. These experiments are examined using KENO-Va along with available cross section libraries and repeated using MCNP as a part of a larger data and code validation effort. In addition, a shipping cask design was examined to provide some insights on the performance of these two computer codes with a wide variety of configurations.

Although similar results were obtained with both KENO and MCNP, the MCNP results showed less variation in the predicted multiplication factors for a wide range of configurations. This gives greater confidence in predicting k-effective for geometries outside the range covered in the benchmark set. However, the MCNP code is significantly more computationally intensive than KENO. Thus, the choice of which code to use in any specific applications becomes a tradeoff in runtime verses the confidence in the results. Such a choice is often made based on the experience of the user.
