The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the variables of acculturation, attributions of ADHD, and help-seeking for the disorder among Chinese mothers. Acculturation, SES, and attributions were hypothesized to have an effect on mothers' attitudes toward professional psychological help and their help seeking behavior for ADHD in children. Participants were 105 Chinese mothers of elementary school children. Acculturation was assessed using a bidimensional model that measured participants' identification toward mainstream and heritage culture. Participants' attributions were ascertained with a hypothetical vignette of a child presenting with symptoms that reflected the DSM--IV criteria for ADHD. Results indicated a significant positive correlation between SES and help--seeking attitudes in Chinese mothers; SES was also found to be a significant predictor of professional help-seeking attitudes. Unexpectedly, there was a positive correlation between mainstream culture identification and heritage culture identification, which could suggest the presence of biculturalism within the sample. Also, there were no significant correlations found between acculturation levels and any of the other variables, which could suggest that acculturation may not be a reliable factor to predict or associate with attributions and help-seeking attitude or behaviors. In examining the attribution dimensions, Locus of Causality (internal vs. external attribution) was found to be a significant predictor in predicting willingness to talk with a pediatrician about ADHD--related behavior; additionally, there was a significant positive correlation found between willingness to talk with a pediatrician and the belief the ADHD is internally caused. The attribution dimension of Controllability was also found to be a significant predictor in predicting willingness to seek professional help. Overall, the attribution dimensions, in general, significantly improved the predictive capacity of predicting help-seeking behavior for ADHD. There was also a general agreement among mothers that the child's behavior is problematic enough to talk to the pediatrician and to consider seeking professional help. Clinical implications of the findings and recommendations for future research are discussed.
