To comprehend the process of modernization in China over the last several decades it is vital to understand the representative female figures of Chinese cinema. Individually, these characters embody the mainstream doctrine of their given era. However, when viewed collectively, a clear pattern emerges highlighting the progression of ideology and enlightenment in Chinese society, and how it has ultimately comes full circle. As the foundation of Chinese cinema, the Shanghai Socialist Film School has served as a driving force behind many of China's best known films, and therefore helped shape the characterization of Chinese women through film.
