Women breast cancer survivors frequently experience a wide range of long-lasting physiological and psychological symptoms and side effects that result from their experiences of being diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer. The most common late and long-term symptoms and side effects among these women include: lymphedema of the arm; numbness, tingling, or tightness in the chest walls, arms, or shoulders; chronic pain; impaired fertility; premature menopause; cardiovascular problems; osteoporosis; myalgia (muscle pain); arthralgia (joint pain); chronic fatigue, chronic sleep problems, posttraumatic stress disorder, anxiety, fear of recurrence, depression, cognitive impairment, poor body image, sexual dysfunction, and decreased life satisfaction. Breast cancer survivors' posttreatment symptomatology may negatively impact their quality of life. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is an 8-week psychosocial group program that can be effective in alleviating women breast cancer survivors' posttreatment physiological and psychological residual symptomatology, in addition to improving their quality of life, well-being, and cancer prognosis.
