Externalized behavioral problems, such as those commonly seen in diagnoses of ADHD, Conduct Disorder, and Oppositional-Defiant Disorder, have been correlated with a number of poor outcomes later in life. While there are currently interventions available to treat these problems and curtail aggressive or oppositional behavior, these interventions are limited in that they frequently rely on external means of control or family involvement. The following program will use animal-assisted therapy to facilitate engagement in and learning of mindfulness-based interventions with the goal of increasing mindfulness in this population, and therefore decreasing problematic behaviors. A review of the literature on the needs of this population and current treatments has been presented, followed by a review of the benefits of animal-assisted therapy and mindfulness-based interventions. The results of interviews with key informants will be presented to further establish a need for this program. Finally, the author will present the program goals and objectives, the program components, an analysis of the potential costs anticipated to run this program, and a plan for program evaluation.
