Interracial dating among African-American women has become a topic of pop culture acknowledgment. As interracial dating and marriage increases among African-American women, identifying the psychological challenges and processes of dating interracially for a Black women was explored. Racial identity, attraction theories (i.e., Social Homogamy Theory; Burgess & Wallin, 1943), and mate criteria selection preference were reviewed in relation to how African-American women choose their mates. Field consultants were interviewed, and it was found that mate preference criteria are not predicated on racial identity, but rather Social Homogamy Theory. The construction of mate preference criteria is influenced by (a) internal factors such as racial identity development, and (b) external factors such as cultural norms, family structure, geographical location, and the experience of daily racism, discrimination, and sexism. The impact of the external factors were examined and determined to act on the African-American woman's racial identity development and worldview. Clinical applications were reviewed to provide clinicians with culturally sensitive approaches to discuss subjects of racial identity development, interracial relationship dynamics and the construction of African-American women's mate preference criteria.
