To be able to study representations of Hispanics in film in the U.S. it is necessary to examine possible causes that have historically influenced the frequency of negative stereotypes and their ill effect. Some ideological concepts and historical events relating to race supremacy and politicians' own agendas have contributed to diverse national discourses, influencing the public's opinion and interaction among culturally and ethnically diverse people. In the fabrication of these national discourses the government, the media, and the power of wealthy business owners has played a significant role, directly or indirectly. As a result, the image of Hispanics has deteriorated, causing stigma and resentment. The purpose of this thesis is to expose historical and ideological constructs that have contributed to stereotypical portrayals of Hispanics in the U.S. and to examine the state of Hispanics in the U.S.
