The topic of parental involvement has been heavily researched and its impact on academic achievement has been well documented in the literature. Various theories have been offered to conceptualize parental involvement, one of the more comprehensive of which is the Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler model of parental involvement. That model conceptualizes the parental involvement process as having five levels which describe the parental involvement process. The first level identifies the factors that motivate parents to become involved. The second level describes that major forms of parental involvement activities and the final level discusses student outcomes. However, this model has only recently begun to be investigated for its application to families of Hispanic origins. In addition, much of the research conducted in the field has not featured people from Hispanic origin or other racially and ethnically diverse families. This is significant given the rapid increase in the number of individuals of diverse backgrounds in the United States. The purpose of the current qualitative case study was to investigate parental involvement from the perspective of Hispanic parents. Specifically, this study investigated Hispanic parents' perception of involvement, the factors that motivate them to become involved, and the activities in which they choose to become engaged. This study may help to determine if the Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler model of parental involvement, which is widely recognized as a comprehensive model of parental involvement, can be generalized to Hispanic parents. Fifty parents of school-aged children were purposely recruited from two community churches to participate in the study. The Parental Involvement Questionnaire, a validated instrument, was utilized to address the research questions. In addition, an interview guide was developed and field tested to solicit open-ended responses from the participants regarding their views on parental involvement. The responses were analyzed utilizing SPSS software and coding techniques. Results of the study indicate that Hispanic parents associate homework help with parental involvement. Other findings include high-levels of parental involvement in home-based activities, and less involvement in school-based activities. Finally, recommendations were made for federal, state, and local educational policy makers.
