A novel, according to the Oxford English Dictionary , is "A long fictional prose narrative, usually filling one or more volumes and typically representing character and action with some degree of realism and complexity" (def. 4b). Novels, in their most basic sense, tell a story. Stories are not always universal, but, instead, discuss and explore various cultures, geographical locations, and experiences. Just as the material contained within novels can be endless, so too can the approaches taken when analyzing and exploring such novels. This thesis will explore how the female bildungsroman genre manifests within the novel to convey complex elements of Pacific Rim coming-of-age stories.

Examining the emergence of the female bildungsroman in contemporary Pacific Rim literatures allows me to highlight the evolutionary nature of the female bildungsroman, how the genre changes to express the stories of complex protagonists, and the understudied nature of these two very important areas of literary studies. Using two novels, Lilian's Story by Kate Grenville and Where We Once Belonged by Sia Figiel, I will explore how female authors of the Pacific Rim employ and alter the female bildungsroman to convey the complex coming-of-age stories of two females living within two opposing cultures. As the female protagonists embody different qualities and the texts embrace the female bildungsroman at different levels, the two novels become an important pairing to begin examining the evolution and development of the female bildungsroman. Both novels highlight the evolutionary nature of the bildungsroman and illuminate the need for a reconceptualized version of the genre in order for readers to understand the multidimensional complexities of novels of female development.
