This study investigated the sensitivity and specificity of the RUMC stroke swallow screen in predicting the need for instrumental assessment of swallowing. The study involved a retrospective patient chart review involving, 125 randomly selected individuals aged 28-79 who were admitted to Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) for a cerebro-vascular accident (CVA) over a 12 month period. Sensitivity and specificity values, positive and negative predictive values, and positive and negative likelihood ratios were calculated. Results from this study revealed that the RUMC stroke swallow screen has a high sensitivity (100%), relatively low specificity (53.7%), and poor positive predictive value (17%). These findings indicate that the RUMC stroke swallow screen is likely an insufficient tool in determining need for instrumental assessment of swallowing by itself in a manner that is most beneficial for patient care and efficiency of healthcare.
