Negative behavior in the classroom setting has evolved beyond the teacher's control; in this dissertation, I investigate the effects of teaching social skills on reducing negative student behavior of middle school students in an urban middle school setting. The character education program, Skillstreaming the Adolescent, was administered in the hopes of decreasing negative behavior in the classroom. The program consisted of fifty prosocial skills divided into six groups. The students were given a pretest created by the Skillstreaming program as well as both the BASC-2 and Skillstreaming posttest at the end of the program. Six seventh grade classes made up the treatment and control groups, and the program was administered from January to May 2013.
