Shakespeare was never one of my favorite authors. The way his works were presented to me in high school and undergraduate studies made him seem dry and dated. It wasn't until I took a class on modern Shakespeare adaptations and read a Gideon Sams' The Punk that I began to realize the possibilities in Shakespeare's work.

With punk's rebellious reputation, it doesn't seem a likely gateway to Shakespeare. However, Dick Hebdige, in his punk study Subculture: The Meaning of Style, writes, "[L]iterary sources turned out to be firmly although implicitly inscribed in the aesthetics of British punk too" (28). Using punk as a lens to Shakespeare allows a new understanding of his works and highlights themes such as female gender resistance, rebellion, and extreme skepticism leaning towards nihilism, which may not be evident if using more traditional academic theories such as historicism or feminism.

The first chapter of this project establishes a relationship between renaissance theater and punk in terms of performance practices and aesthetic and in the interaction between the performers and the government. This chapter uses Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of carnival to explain this connection. The second chapter discusses Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, particularly Kate, and the X Ray Spex as providing an insight into feminine gender resistance that rebelled against traditional female roles as defined by society's expectations. The last chapter examines Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with Gideon Sams' The Punk, a punk adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. In using punk as a lens for this tragedy, I show a distinctly skeptical and rather nihilistic point of view in Shakespeare's writing that is not often noticed.
