Small businesses owned by African Americans have contributed to the American economy since the middle 1600s, when slave traders first brought Africans to the continent. The economic development and material prosperity of the local community depend on these small businesses. Prior researchers revealed that finances, marketing efforts, and the quality of products and services impact business performance, particularly in consumer sales. The purpose of this study was to explore strategies essential for increasing African American small business success in Omaha, Nebraska. A phenomenological design was used to investigate the personal experiences of successful African American small business owners. The value maximization and stakeholder theory informed the role of change, economic development, and empowerment in this urban community. Interview data were collected from 20 African American small business owners in Omaha, Nebraska, and were analyzed via the modified van Kaam method. Seven prominent themes emerged: (a) customer service, (b) persistence, (c) passion, (d) knowledge, (e) faith, (f) marketing, and (g) organization. These findings may help African American small business owners identify strategies inhibiting success and strategies that provide long-term viability and profitability. The implication of social change is to ignite change through successful entrepreneurship that might positively impact urban communities such as those in Omaha, Nebraska. Successful entrepreneurship, in turn, will promote job creation and economic development in the city, thereby increasing the quality of lives of its residents.
