Female empowerment is increasing rapidly in America, and African American women are starting their own businesses to seek greater control over their personal and professional lives. This qualitative study is an overview on the results of interviews that were conducted with Black female entrepreneurs in a southwestern urban area. African American female entrepreneurs were questioned about factors that contributed to their entrepreneurial success. General questions about their family background and their qualifications were asked to complete the picture. Six basic themes (human capital, demographic, cultural perspectives, motivations, customer services, management, and leadership perspectives) formed the theoretical framework for this study. The selected sample of 18 African American female entrepreneurs was drawn from a female-owned business (2012) database using a maximum variation strategy. By using in-depth interviews, data were collected, coded, and organized regarding the research question. Key elements of the theoretical framework guided the data analysis and interpretation of the data. The study revealed that networking, financial stability, and education are the top factors that contributed to success. Also, the type of industry, the location, and experience contribute as much as 50% of being successful. Overall, placing God first, having passion for what one does, and doing hard work with determination counts as the most important success factors.
