This applied dissertation focused on four major components of successful private independent Catholic schools in the United States who were members of the National Association of Private Catholic* and Independent Schools (NAPC*IS) to determine the impact of the components on the successful start-up and sustainability of the schools. The major components were: (a) the individual, (b) the start-up process, (c) organizational decisions made at start-up, and (d) the operational environment in which the school opened. Success was measured by continued operation beyond the average closure rate of inactive member schools of 6.14 years. Areas of entrepreneurship and their application to NAPC*IS schools were explored.

Both active member schools open beyond 6.14 years and inactive schools were surveyed and the major components and sub-components within each major category were correlated. Results showed that individuals with a minimum of four years or more of college, who have previous supervisory experience and little financial investment in the new venture, and who built up the job flexibility and involvement of their teachers in strategies and goal setting of the school, characterized the lead entrepreneur or founder of the successful schools. Successful schools used the first three phases of the program planning model, planned a minimum of 22 weeks before opening, and operated with only formal written communication with the local Bishop. Standard operating procedures correlated significantly with longevity for both open and closed schools.
