In the artworks of Wim Delvoye, subjectivity, reflexivity and performativity are three notions that provide a framework for the appreciation of contemporary artworks. Until the mid-twentieth century, subjectivity was perceived as an attribute of a singular subject that arises from a singular point of view. But today, contemporary artworks are often created intersubjectively; as exemplified in the art of Delvoye, whose works reflect and mirror postmodern conditions. The thesis argues, the postmodernist context necessitates that artworks are about society. Artworks are reflexive because society is reflexive; it is an entity that acts upon itself. I argue that performativity, a reflexive intersubjective notion, is a prime postmodern mode. I define the artwork as a specified outcome through an artistic medium in generative action and argue that Wim Delvoye is an authoring artist in the lineage of Marcel Duchamp and Jackson Pollock, who authored changes in the perception of artistic subjectivity.
