Thesis (Ed.D.)--Saint Joseph's University, 2011.
Art Education within the United States has undergone several transformations including the focus upon the integration of visual arts with other academic core subject matter to encourage student academic achievement and learning. This grounded theory case study began with a school directive for daily incorporation of both reading and mathematics within the visual arts classes in order to improve student standardized test scores on the Pennsylvania State Standardized Assessment test (PSSA). The results of this study identifies concepts related to integration of visual arts classes based upon information that was gathered through the perspectives of teacher, administrator, and student focus group interviews in conjunction with classroom observation and content analysis. The results of this study will assist public school district policymakers and administrators as they work towards the maintenance and support of the visual arts in schools. Additionally, the study of the relationship between the integration of reading and mathematics in visual arts programs increases the understanding and identify the connections between visual arts integration and student academic learning.
