This thesis investigates the gap in the research regarding online music critics. In recent years, popular music magazines have either fallen to the wayside or transferred to an online only format leaving music criticism in a precarious position. The most notable problems in relation to this media shift is the influx of music sites or blogs which provide music criticism, and the increasingly social aspect of the internet which enables users to instantly respond to and comment on music reviews. Using grounded theory and textual analysis, this thesis looks to answer two research questions: (1) What discursive strategies do music critics use to negotiate their authority in their online music reviews? (2) How do members of online music communities interact with music critics in comments sections?

To answer these questions, 40 reviews and 1052 forum comments were gathered. Analysis of these documents revealed that online music critics negotiate their authority through a number of strategies including personal anecdotes, referential comments, authenticity, vulgarity, humor, and poetics. The members of the online communities that read these reviews in turn use a variety of different communication patterns to interact, including the use of personal experience, community building, criticism, and humor. What this thesis ultimately proposes is the virtual music community acting as a new, unique art world.
