This thesis explores the Zambales' resistance to Spanish colonization in the Philippines in light of the silver trade between New Spain and China. Sources include texts regarding first encounters, history of the Philippines, ethnographic studies of the Zambales and primary source documents from the AGI (General Archive of the Indies) in Seville, Spain. Through a critical reading of documents and texts, my thesis proposes that the Zambales were negatively and erroneously characterized by the Spaniards in order to justify war against them to extend and protect trade with the Chinese.
